Weinviertel DAC. That Peppery Character!

Weinviertel - Home of the spicy Whites!

By introducing the DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) system of controlled designation of origin Austria has, for the first time, rated the origin of grapes as of more significance than the grapes themselves. The Weinviertel (a geographical region in Lower Austria) has taken a decisive step towards a new era of wine labelling and therefore the Grüner Veltliner typical of its dry, spicy-fruity taste and its high quality proudly shows its origin as a Weinviertel dac wine.

The Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine producing area; and indeed the Grüner Veltliner is the wine of the region with its 8000 ha, which accounts for more than 50 % of the vineyards. During the past years, the Grüner Veltliner received attention also in the international arena and it has increasingly become known as a high quality wine due to its spicy-fruity style. Understandable therefore that the Grüner Veltliner from the Weinviertel with its marked peppery taste has become Austria's first DAC wine.

The Model Grüner Veltliner: Weinviertel dac Reserve

VieVinum is Austria's biggest wine event and takes place every two years in Vienna's Hofburg Palace, where international wine specialists have the opportunity to taste the diverse and complex Austrian wine landscape.
“The Weinviertel was represented by more than 50 wineries this year,” said Roman Pfaffl, chairman of the Weinviertel Wine Committee. “And it used this international platform to successfully present the Weiniertel DAC to the world, not only in terms of wine typicity, but also as a concept and a well-known brand.“

10 Years of Weinviertel dac – a Peppery Success Story

Josef Pleil, Roman Pfaffl and Willi Kinger

The summation of 10 years of the Weinviertel dac is remarkable: “The Weinviertel dac is an impressive success story in Austrian viniculture!,” says Josef Pleil, president of the Austrian Winegrowers' Association as well as the father and proponent of origin marketing in Austria. Today, more than 600 wineries in the Weinviertel wine-growing area produce the Weinviertel dac, which is made of the region- and variety-typical Grüner Veltliner.“Sales increased continuously over these ten years to 3.8 million bottles of Weinviertel dac in 2011,” states winemaker Roman Pfaffl, who is also head of the Weinviertel Regional Wine Committee. Additionally, the export quota has increased, and with the introduction of the Weinviertel dac Reserve, another very important step in the development of the market is complete. The peppery Grüner Veltliner from the Weinviertel is, thanks to this long-term strategy, a known and beloved product for Herrn und Frau Österreicher – Mr. and Mrs. Austria.
