Weinviertel DAC. That Peppery Character!

Weinviertel dac - Austria’s Most Peppery Wine!

Weinviertel – The Home of Spicy Whites

Situated to the south of the Thaya river, between the Manhartsberg mountain to the west and the Marchauen to the east, the Weinviertel extends southwards right to the gates of Vienna. The fertile region with its rolling hills is Central Europe’s oldest agricultural site, as witnessed by archaeological finds dating back some 7,000 years. The entire region derives its name from viticulture: Weinviertel, the wine district. Warm loess soils and a Pannonian climate with mild winters give the Weinviertel wines their typical fruit, while the difference between daytime and night time temperatures intensifies the aroma of the region’s wines.

The Grüner Veltliner with its Pfefferl, its “kick” of peppery spice, is the characteristic wine of the region. 8,000 hectares are planted with Grüner Veltliner here, the world’s greatest concentration of the varietal. Connoisseurs love Weinviertel wines for their diversity, and even lovers of rare specialities will find everything they are looking for, from whites to outstanding red and even great sweet wines, such as ice wine.

Climate and soils of the Weinviertel offer immense possibilities to wine growers, and the region had produced an incomparably rich wine culture. The experience of Weinviertel wine producers guarantees wines of the highest quality.

Enjoy a good glass of wine from the Weinviertel – a region with great plans. Cheers!

Weinviertel DAC – Unmistakable Taste

For lovers of Grüner Veltliner a new era has dawned. Weinviertel DAC is the denomination for wines made from the traditional Grüner Veltliner grape, whose taste is typical of the Weinviertel.
Strict controls assure the unmistakable taste
Apart from its light, greenish yellow colour, the typical aroma of the variety, and the fruity, peppery taste, a Weinviertel DAC wine must not show woody notes (i.e. elaboration in barrels) or an exaggerated alcohol content. 12% alcohol are the minimum. A chemical analysis and a professional tasting panel assure that every “Weinviertel dac” wine fulfils these stringent requirements.
Transparency creates confidence
It is our goal to assure that the Weinviertel DAC is a style unique in the world. This facilitates the choice of wine lovers, who are able to associate a clear taste with wines bearing this name. Other quality wines from the region, made from other grape varieties or vinified differently, bear the imprint of the producer’s style, not primarily of the region. This approach guarantees that the variety and individuality of Weinviertel wines will continue to exist alongside the appellation.
Pioneer Weinviertel
The Weinviertel is the first Austrian region to introduce the link between regional style and a controlled appellation of origin. This will help wine lovers at home and abroad. The Weinviertel has also become a trailblazer for a new understanding of wines and their origins in Austria. Today, the Weinviertel is one of Austria’s most innovative wine producing regions!

This is how it should be: Light to greenish yellow, with fruity, peppery spice.
Add a little “Pfefferl” to your life!

Quick Facts about DAC:
What does DAC mean and what is a DAC wine?
DAC is short for Districtus Austriae Controllatus, or “Austrian controlled origin”. Since 2003, the DAC label is awarded to Austrian wines expressing the character of their region, analyzed and chosen by experts. A DAC wine is not a new kind of wine. The “quality wine” system enshrined in Austrian law recognizes DAC wines as quality wines particularly typical of their region. Austria has introduced the DAC system on the basis of the appellation systems of famous regions in Italy (Chianti, Soave), France (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Chablis) or Spain (Rioja). In these countries, the appellations are called DOC/ DOCG, AOC/ AC or DOCa/ DO.

Are DAC wines better than other quality wines?
No, both are quality wines according to Austrian law. The DAC label designates a wine that has not only a particularly high quality, but is also typical for the style of the region and its varieties. For this reason, the appellation always carries the name of the wine-producing region: Weinviertel DAC.
